One of the places, while in Hawaii, we did a tour of was Volcanoes National Park. Our bus driver and tour guide looked and sounded like Tommy Chong. We walked on harden lava, saw steam coming up from the ground, live lava flows and the Thurston Lava Tube. "Lava tubes are natural conduits through which lava travels beneath the surface of a lava flow, expelled by a volcano during an eruption. They can be actively draining lava from a source, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased and the rock has cooled and left a long, cave-like channel." It was a 20 minute walk from the parking lot on a gravel path through a thick and beautiful rain forest before reaching the lave tube. Inside it was dark and moist with a few scattered lights to show you the way through. It was amazing.
Here are some pictures of me, my hubby, my son and his friend walking through the tube.

Jeez, I miss Hawaii! That was the best trip ever. Soooo romantic and I think I wore a bikini the entire time. We rented a jeep and it had no roof or doors and we were soaking wet when it rained on and off all day. I go there in my mind when I want to escape. Ahh.... Have you been to the lava tube cave in Flagstaff? It has ice year round in it. It's very cool. I like how it's just a hanger-shaped cave--very easy on people who hate caves. Thanks for the little getaway.
ReplyDeleteI want to go back and spend more time on the islands. The last time we were on a cruise and only spent hours on some of the islands. We did have a great time and Hawaii was so beautiful. I have not seen the lava tube cave in Flagstaff yet but will the next time we are up there.

I sort of miss Hawaii, too. Was stationed in Pearl Harbor for 2.5 yrs. Never did get to see anything like that Lava Tube. To walk thru and see what once had hot molten Lava flowing thru must have been very interesting to see. Would like to have done that, but never got the chance. Nice Post.
