The Mysterious Thunderbird Photo

During my search for some unsolved mysteries in Arizona, I came across this bizarre photo. This mystery photo is of a popularly known “Thunderbird” with a mysterious creature captured near the town of Tombstone.

In April of 1890, two cowboys noticed an immense flying creature, while in the Arizona desert. This creature’s body was about 92 feet long and was smooth like a serpent. It had huge wings, about a 160 foot wingspan, featherless and resembling bat’s wings. It also had two clawed feet, with a face of an alligator. They followed it on horseback until the horses were too afraid to continue, and then chased it on foot. It kept landing and taking off until the cowboys shot it full of bullets with their riffles, and finally killed it. Then the cowboys cut off a piece of the wing and brought it to Tombstone. At least this is how one of the stories were told.

Was this a true story or just an urban legend? The story was presumed to be written in an April 1892 issue of the Tombstone newspaper, the Epitaph. It was also told that a photo of a enormous bird was seen nailed to a wall. Since many tall tales have been spun in newspapers during this distinctive time in history, it’s hard to say whether it is a true story or just folklore. Employees working for the Epitaph search through many old issues of the newspaper and found no such photo. The question everyone is pondering, is the photo real? Many have remembered seeing the elusive “Thunderbird Photo” but no one seems to know where it is. Some feel that the photo posted above has been tampered with and the dead creature was added in. Also, according to the stories told, two men supposed to have found and killed the bird-like creature, but six men are in the photo. There is lots of mystery surrounding the photo, its existence and whereabouts, and the strange story that goes with it.

This is an unusual one indeed. If you know anything about this story, whether it is true or not, I would love to hear more.

  1. The thunderbird is one of the lest written about "creatures" out there.

This is the first reference I've read where it was in the southeast.

  2. I don't know much about it. I ran across some articles about the creature and photo and decided to do a blog on it. There was an Arizona connection and unsolved mystery about the whole thing that facinated me. I'm hoping that some bloggers out there might know more. Thanks for your comment, @eloh.

  4. Hi Autumn, don't ya just love mysterious legends? I do. I have that Monsterquest show recorded as well as others. I like to do a Monterquest and cheesy Syfy movies marathon on Sunday's, if nothing else is going on.

  5. Would you consider gathering up what there is out there and writing an article on the Thunderbird?

I "think" I might be able to hook you up with a fairly high level Lakota.

I'll check on it to see how high I can get that will talk.

Damn....my kids keep telling me NOT to use that phrase...I am old, please see all my writing as "old lady meanings."

  6. This is interesting Julie! I had heard of it -but not to the degree of detail you have here-in fact the location wasnt even told -when I heard of it (i think it was on Coasttocoast AM ) a long time ago-If you google or any search engine the name "Loren Coleman" he might have info somehere on it-cant say for sure-but i think he is considered the "premier" cryptozoologist. this kind of reminds me of that 1897 airship with the alien in it that (maybe?) came down in Aurora Texas-all the best to both of you and have a lovely weekend!!

  7. @eloh, go for it. If you get the Lakota to talk, I will write it, lol.

Devin, thanks for the information. I think I will google his name and see where it takes me and what other information I can find. Maybe I can do a follow-up if there is anything else to write about. I find this story interesting. Take care...

  8. WOW...Coast to Coast isn't what it used to be.

    That boarders on dangerous talk.

That was a TIGAR that literally and figuratively got beaten into a half dead kitten.

I remember about 15 years ago when Art started interviewing Maj. Ed Dames...I knew trouble would follow.

I was just glad Art and his family got through it alive.

I've been to the web site (current) so wish there was a way to access the stuff from 15 years ago.

  9. I will endeavor to stay off the Internet after taking my night medication. It should lessen the paranoia and improve the spelling.

  11. I've never been a big believer in these mythical creature things. I'm not saying they don't exist...I've just never been to into the whole concept. Weird I know. But that pic looks cool!
