I have seen this odd behavior with our Golden Retriever, Dusty. We had Dusty since she was eight weeks
old until she died at the age of 13 years. Dusty was a beautiful, smart dog. She knew how to get the better of us and her buddy Shadow, our Black Lab/Chow mix. She would watch Shadow spend several minutes burying a bone or treat; then waited for her to leave and would dig it up. She even went as far as showing Shadow what she did. Her main form of exercise besides chasing Shadow and being walked was stalking pigeons and grabbing them out of mid-air. She was amusing to watch. Dusty had this low bark that was followed by a growl which made her sound more vicious than she really was. On many occasions I would hear her constantly barking at something and would check it out. Some of the times she would be barking directly at Shadow being bossy or holding her head up looking towards the sky to bark at the neighbor’s dogs. Then there were other times where she would be looking at a section of our yard or patio, with the hairs up on her back, barking at nothing. Her bark sounded different almost like she was scared. This would occur often during any part of the day and she would not stop until I told her to. Part of the time I thought something might be wrong with her. Then, there were other times when I got chills and wondered if she was seeing something I couldn't see. There was no cat, pigeon or any other reason for the behavior that was visible to me. All of Dusty’s barkingI researched my question online and found more stories than answers. Don’t get me wrong, the stories were interesting, but I wanted answers. Some of “experts” said that an animal’s senses are more keenly developed than a human’s. They are able to see things that we are unable to see with our naked eye. Animals have been known to alert their owners of dangerous situations even before the owner is aware that something is wrong. They can sense danger, even know who the bad people are and when you are feeling upset about something. I know that when I have been feeling bad or upset, my dogs will sit by me as if they know that I need some comfort and love.
And so I put this question to you: Can Animals See Ghosts? Do you have any interesting stories about any unusual behavior by an animal or animals in your life? My only experiences are with dogs, so I am interested in hearing stories on other types of animals.

This was a great post! There was a conversation in our family some years ago about this very subject -my aunt was talking about how this cat she and my uncle owned always seemed to be 'tracking' things with her eyes that they couldnt see-I completely agreed as I had observed this behavior in friends pets growing up -Maybe I do not live in a 'haunted' condo:-) but I have never noticed my cat tracking anything that I eventually couldnt see-but I always keep on the lookout for this behavior-many people around the world believe in this ability for animals -I cannot give you a yes or a no -because of my own experiences are so little-but given what I have heard other people say over the course of my life I would give it an 85 percent yes answer-the reason for such a strong yes is the tracking with eyes-as if they are watching something -if it were just sounds I would not feel so certain -as sounds can come from a huge variety of sources and humans cant hear very much-but i think the eye tracking is very important -unless they are simply seeing small insignificant objects-but if this were the case why wouldnt they act this way all the time-as there are always so many small particles in the air etc. There are also many stories i have read over the years being an animal lover about how if the husband/wife/child passes away in a family -sometimes the pet -cat or dog will react to something sometime after the death as if the animal is playing with something or someone that others cant see! best to you both as always -and thanks for always having such thought-provoking posts!
ReplyDeleteDevin, as always, thanks for your comments. My chihuahua does the eye-tracking while he is lying on his favorite chair. When I'm sitting on the couch, his eyes will appear to be following something behind me. This is a dog that likes to growl at flies then try to eat them so I'm not sure if he is tracking a fly or something else. I did hear several stories about my friend's cats that were interesting as well. Lots of hissing, eye tracking, backs arched and other behaviors that the owners found to be unusual. Condsidering what I have seen with my dogs, I would say yes, but there is still a small percentage of me that is not sure. I wanted to write about this subject because it always found it interesting.
ReplyDeletei believe animals are much more in tune with their environments given they take things at face value. they (supposedly) lack the higher reasoning that humans do and therefore they don't have that place of doubt in them that questions what they've just experienced. plus i believe they are "closer" to nature.
ReplyDeleteanyway as such yes, i believe they experience ghostly encounters. there have been times when we've seen our little pooch react to something we cannot see. however, i'm pretty sure most if not all of those times are things to be explained like something under the house or an animal walking outside that she's sensing. but given this heightened state of awareness, i completely believe it's possible for them to experience spirit visitors.
When we moved into my childhood home, the first family member to know something was wrong was our dog, King. King was a German Shephard/Collie mix. His hair would rise, he'd go down on his front legs with his rear in the air, and growl and snarl at nothing in the room. My mother would feel the hairs rise on her neck and arms, her eyes traveling to the spot. Sometimes, King would get aggressive and start to pull at something that wasn't in his mouth. Other times, he'd runaway and hide under the barn, cowering, and wimpering. We never could get him to go into the house again. We'd have to physically carry him when he needed a bath. Dogs are especially sensitive. When we lived in Redondo Beach, that was the only way I knew an earthquake was coming, the entire neighborhood of dogs would go insane barking and I'd a feel deep chill, and then run to the corner of the apartment to hide. Having a dog isn't just having a protector and a best friend, it's having a psychic and a fireman too.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had to many experiences with any of my pets showing odd behavior. I did have one dog many years ago who I saw barking into a corner of wall of our house. That freaked me out a little cause I knew dogs could see ghosts! Lol.
ReplyDeleteThen one time my niece saw a ghost dog chasing a cat when we were at the Whaley House in San Diego. That's kind of the opposite, but it's sort of the same! lol.

Nice to see everyone. That is great idea for a future blog, Mike, Ghost Animals.....thanks!
ReplyDeleteNot only can animals see spirits, they can communicate with them. One of my dogs, a sheltie,is now very old, but, when he used to play with his best "bud" who was a bunny, he only played one way. He has a signature behavior for every animal that he has lived with and he never, ever played with another animal like he played with his bunny-buddy. After the bunny passed away we observed the sheltie getting up & playing with what we thought was nothing... in just the same way as he did with his buddy. We observed him following "something" with his eyes like he did the bunny. He would run through the house, not only chasing but being chased by something that we couldn't see. We tried to logically dismiss this behavior as "remembered behavior" until we began being bit in the back (which is where bunny-buddy would nip us when he was frustrated with us). We spoke to the bunny and let him know that we'd gotten the message. The biting stopped and the sheltie kept playing. Since our sheltie is very old now and quite ill, we know that the next time bunny-buddy comes to play he'll also be coming to take his sheltie-buddy home. He'll have a trusted escort.
ReplyDeleteOn other occassions, one of our cats has been petted by a friend who crossed over. I couldn't sleep one night & came in to the kitchen where I observed this particular cat on the counter moving as if he was being pet by unseen hands. He was very calm and thoroughly enjoying his attention. Could I see anyone... Nope! So, I grabbed the Digital camera, took a photo, and got a full, large, glowing, egg-shaped "orb" moving away from kitty. The look on kitty's face is like, "Fine! Now I'm not getting scratched. Fine!" I ticked off my cat by trying to get a photo of his friend. My-bad!!
I have many incidents like this around my home on a regular basis. Animals are, I believe, of a higher nature than we. They don't have an agenda like we do. They don't have society telling them day after day that these "things" don't exist. They are of truth and light, so why shouldn't they see, hear, & communicate with the other side. Also true, physiologically, they do see, hear, and smell much better than we humans. That is the animal sense that science says is so "base" for survival. Remember that scientists are only human and thusly have a human ego that they stroke daily. Scientists feel that they're at the top of the ladder and therefore almost omnipotent in their thinking. In reality, science has closed it's mind off to what has been in existence longer than humanity has existed. If "science" can't explain it, it doesn't exist. Somethings can't be explained fully... they just are!!
Thank you.
